May Mushroom Growing and Educational Workshops Kaslo and Slocan Valley.
Join mycologist Peter McAllister from Underbelly Farm and the Kootenay Agroforestry Society in two workshops designed to enliven your relationship the mushroom Kindom. Peter is sharing over 15 years of success and failure growing culinary and medicinal mushrooms indoors and outdoors, organically in the Kootenays. These workshops are designed for anyone interested in establishing local, perennial sources of mushrooms for food and medicine, or to boost yields and nutrition in the garden, orchard and forest. Both workshops offered will demonstrate simple low tech methods utilizing abundant local materials for personal consumption, markets or agroforesty applications.

Photodocumentary and discussion of growing and harvesting mushrooms in the Kootenays. Topics include gardening with symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi, curing Shiitakes to increase vit. D levels, easy method to grow oyster mushrooms in pine needles, the general lifecycle of a mushroom and how mushrooms can save the world.

Hands on Mushroom growing Workshops:
This workshop demonstrates how to inoculate Shiitake spawn into local Alder logs for indoor or outdoor propagation. Participants take home two inoculated Shiitake logs with instructions on how to care for and fruit the logs. The techniques learned in this course apply to a wide range of mushroom species. Wear outdoor work clothes and bring a lunch..
